|
This page is for the information of students, parents, and others interested in ISDSI programs, and focuses on the
recent military coup in Thailand on September 19, 2006.
Current situation Current information provided by the US State Department, Thai and international media, and our own contacts in Thailand is that the situation is stable. There has been a peaceful coup, with the military taking control of the government and dissolving parliment. Wednesday, September 20, 2006 has been declared a national holiday, with banks, government offices and schools closing. This has been done to de-escelate any conflict, and keep the situation calm. The coup leaders have stated that they plan to return the country as quickly as possible to a democratically elected government. ISDSI program update As soon as we learned about the coup, the ISDSI executive team activated our response plan for this sort of event. We have been in contact with our students, and have briefed them on the situation and their responsibilities. We have been a part of the US Consulate Warden program for years, and are in touch with the US Consulate regarding this situation. At this time the ISDSI programs, including study abroad programs and internships will continue as usual. ISDSI continues to monitor the situation. Additional information There are a number of excellent sources for information online. A good introduction to the current situation is this article: Thai Coup (International Herald Tribune) We have found that among the best sources for current and accurate information are the following: |
