ISDSI Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) Information
This page is for the information of students, parents, and others interested in ISDSI programs. We are fortunate to be working in Thailand, which has been described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having the most aggressive and proactive approach to avian influenza in Southeast Asia. ISDSI precautions regarding Avian Influenza Current information provided by WHO suggests that those who contract avian influenza tend to be those who are in close and on-going contact with large numbers of sick birds and/or bird feces, e.g. people working on poultry farms or living in close physical contact with infected birds. ISDSI does not take students onto poultry farms, and advises students to be sure to eat well cooked chicken and/or duck meat and eggs. ISDSI continues to monitor the situation, and is in contact with US Consular officials in Chiang Mai regarding appropriate precautions and responses. In the event of a pandemic with human-to-human transmission, ISDSI will follow US Consular and World Health Organization recommendations regarding the safety and well being of its students. Additional information There is a great deal of misinformation about avian influenza in the media, and many people are understandably confused about the current risk. We have found that among the best sources for current and accurate information are the following: |
